The performance of oil analysis spectrometers using oscillatory arc dischargesources is dependent on the output characteristics and frequency of theexcitation source. The SFTM can be used to monitor and verify the excitationsource frequency. It is designed for use in applications where consistencyto data bases is important. To optimize spectrometer performance and correlation,the SFTM must be used in the following situations:

	after maintenance to the excitation source
	prior to the analysis of monthly JOAP or round-robin correlation samples
	upon deployment or relocation of the spectrometer
